Lesson 3: How Scoring Works

Padel uses the same scoring system as tennis, so if you know tennis scoring you are already ahead!

Points within a game:

  • Points go: 15 → 30 → 40 → Game
  • If both pairs reach 40-40, this is called deuce
  • From deuce, a pair must win two consecutive points (first an advantage, then the game)
  • Alternatively, a golden point system can be agreed upon, where just one point decides the game

Games within a set:

  • First pair to six games wins the set — but they must lead by at least two games
  • If the score reaches 6-6, a tie-break is played
  • A tie-break is first to 7 points, won by a margin of two

Sets within a match:

  • A standard match is best of three sets
  • The first pair to win two sets wins the match

FIP also permits shorter formats like a Mini Set (4 games), which is great for beginners practising in limited time.
