Lesson 5 of 5 · Learn Cricket USA
Basic Strategy and Beginner Tips
Now that you know the rules, here is how teams think strategically in T20 cricket.
Batting strategy:
- The Powerplay (first 6 overs) is crucial — only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle, so batters should attack and score big early.
- In overs 7–20, up to five fielders may be outside the circle, making scoring harder. Batters must pick the right moments to take risks.
- Each bowler can bowl a maximum of 4 overs, so batters should target weaker bowlers.
Bowling and fielding strategy:
- Spread overs across multiple bowlers to stay within the 4-over limit per bowler.
- Protect runs during the Powerplay by bowling accurately inside the 30-yard ring.
- Avoid no-balls — they give away a run *and* a free hit, which is very costly.
Beginner tips for watching or playing:
- Focus on the Powerplay — it usually sets the tone for the whole innings.
- Watch the 30-yard circle to understand fielding restrictions.
- A Six off the last ball can change everything — T20 is never truly over early.
- Learn the dismissal types first; once you spot them, the game becomes much easier to follow.
Enjoy the fast pace and big hits — that is what T20 cricket is all about!
