Key Rules and Ways to Get Out
Cricket has clear rules about how batters are dismissed and what counts as illegal play.
An innings ends when:
- 10 batters are out (all out), or
- The team has used all 20 overs, whichever comes first.
Ways a batter can be dismissed:
- Bowled: The ball hits the stumps and knocks off the bails.
- Caught: A fielder catches the ball before it touches the ground.
- LBW (leg before wicket): The ball strikes the batter's pad in line with the stumps and would have hit them.
- Run out: The wicket is broken while batters are running and out of their crease.
- Stumped: The wicket-keeper breaks the wicket while the batter steps out of the crease.
Common violations and penalties:
- No-ball / Wide: Penalty run given plus the delivery is re-bowled.
- Slow over-rate: If the fielding team bowls too slowly, one fewer fielder is allowed outside the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs.
- Dangerous bowling: Repeated beamers or excessive bouncers earn warnings and can result in the bowler being removed.
- Ball tampering or dissent: Punished with penalty runs, fines, or suspension.
