Lesson 2 of 5 · Learn Drone Racing League
The Playing Area & Equipment
DRL tracks are three-dimensional courses set indoors or outdoors. There is no fixed field size — layouts change depending on the venue, making every Level unique and challenging.
Track obstacles include:
- Gates — openings pilots must fly through
- Flags — markers pilots must fly around
- Ladders — additional course elements pilots navigate
To score a valid gate pass, any part of the aircraft must breach the front plane — the interior perimeter of the gate opening. Simply flying near a gate is not enough!
Equipment in DRL:
- All pilots use identical spec drones, goggles, and controllers
- This levels the playing field so skill decides the winner
- DRL's purpose-built RacerX prototype holds a Guinness World Record at nearly 180 mph
Race structure:
- A typical DRL Level fields two semifinal groups of six pilots each
- Heats are short — roughly one minute in DRL
- MultiGP-style timed runs are commonly capped around two minutes
Understanding the track and gear is your first step toward reading a race like a pro!
