Lesson 5 of 5 · Learn Flag Football
Basic Strategy & Beginner Tips
Now that you know the rules, here are practical tips to help you play smarter from day one.
On Offense:
- Since the QB cannot run forward, build plays around quick handoffs and short passes.
- Use the 5-yard conversion after a touchdown — it is a lower-risk way to add a point.
- Approaching a No-Run Zone, plan your passing routes in advance since running is banned there.
- Move efficiently — you only have 25 seconds to snap the ball after a huddle.
On Defense:
- Position rush defenders more than 7 yards from the line if you want to blitz legally.
- Communicate with teammates to cover receivers — with only 5 players per side, everyone must help.
- Watch for flag guarding by the ball carrier and call it out to officials.
General Beginner Tips:
- Practice flag pulling — grabbing cleanly without holding or shoving is a skill.
- Learn the field layout early, especially No-Run Zones and the midfield line.
- Stay aware of the 7-second QB clock — as a receiver, run your route quickly.
- Most importantly, avoid all unnecessary contact; this keeps the game safe and penalty-free for everyone.
