Lesson 2 of 5 · Learn Flag Football
The Playing Area & Equipment
Understanding the field and gear will help you feel confident before your first game.
The Field:
- The playing area is 50 yards long by 25 yards wide.
- There are two end zones, each 10 yards deep, making the total field length about 70 yards.
- A midfield line divides the field into two equal halves.
- No-Run Zones exist in the last 5 yards before each goal line. Inside these zones, the offense must pass — running is not allowed.
Starting Play:
- There are no kickoffs. Every possession begins with a snap at the offense's own 5-yard line.
Key Equipment:
- A standard football used for snapping and passing.
- Each ball carrier wears a flag belt with fabric flags attached. Pulling a flag ends the play immediately.
No contact is the foundation of this sport, so no helmets or pads are required, making it accessible and safe for players of all ages and skill levels.
