Lesson 2 of 5 · Learn Lacrosse

The Playing Area & Equipment

Understanding the field and gear is your next step as a beginner.

The Field:

  • The field is rectangular, measuring 70 metres long and 36 metres wide
  • For non-sanctioned events, dimensions can range roughly 55–75 m long and 35–55 m wide
  • There is one goal at each end of the field
  • Each goal has a goal crease — a protected area around it
  • A centre line divides the field into two halves

Key Zones to Know:

  • The crease around your opponent's goal is off-limits to attacking players
  • The goalkeeper has protected status inside their own crease
  • The centre line is a boundary the goalkeeper must never cross during play

Basic Equipment:

  • Players use a lacrosse stick (a long handle with a mesh pocket) to carry, pass, and shoot the ball
  • A lacrosse ball is used during play
  • The goalkeeper has special protected gear suited for stopping shots

Knowing the layout of the field will help you understand positioning and where the action happens during a game!
