Lesson 5: Basic Strategy & Beginner Tips
Now that you know the rules, here are some practical tips to help you play smarter from day one.
Communication is everything:
- Since teammates share up to 3 touches, call out early whether you are taking the ball or setting it up for your partner
Vary your serves:
- The server gets two attempts, so use the first serve aggressively and keep the second serve safe to avoid a double fault
- Aim for clean bounces that are low and fast to make returning harder
Move after you hit:
- Remember, there are no boundaries — after hitting the ball, quickly reposition to cover more of the 360-degree space around the net
Target the rim and gaps:
- Shots that hit the rim or force opponents into awkward angles are powerful offensive tools
Play defense actively:
- Defenders must make an effort to clear out of the offense's path to avoid a hindrance call
Focus on consistency first:
- Beginners should prioritize clean, legal returns over fancy shots
- Keeping the ball in play gives opponents more chances to make mistakes
With practice, these fundamentals will become second nature!
