What Is Sim Racing & What's the Objective?
Sim Racing is competitive virtual motorsport held on physics-accurate platforms such as iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC). Drivers compete from racing rigs equipped with a wheel, pedals, and sometimes VR headsets.
The core objective is simple:
- Complete the scheduled race distance faster than every other car.
- Finish first across the finish line.
Racing can be single-class (all cars are the same type) or multiclass (faster and slower car classes race simultaneously, scored separately within each class).
A typical race weekend follows three structured sessions:
- Practice – Free running (~30 minutes) to learn the track; incidents here do not affect your ratings.
- Qualifying – Timed laps to set your grid position; skipping qualifying places you at the back of the grid.
- Race – A fixed lap count or timed duration, ranging from short sprints of 15–30 minutes to multi-hour endurance events with driver swaps.
Understanding this format is your first step to enjoying sim racing!
