Lesson 5 of 5 · Learn Squash
Basic Strategy and Beginner Tips
Now that you know the rules, here are practical tips to help you start playing well.
Control the "T":
- The centre of the court (where the short line meets the half-court line) is called the T
- Returning to this position after each shot gives you the best reach to all corners
Use the front wall smartly:
- Always aim above the tin (0.48 m) and below the out line (4.57 m) on the front wall
- Hitting low and straight keeps your opponent moving to the back corners
Serving tips:
- Remember to keep one foot inside the service box and aim between the service line (1.83 m) and the out line (4.57 m)
- A good serve lands in the opposite back quarter court
Scoring reminder:
- Since every rally scores a point, stay focused and compete hard even when receiving serve
General beginner advice:
- Move smoothly and give your opponent fair access to avoid interference calls
- Keep your shots consistent rather than going for winners too early
- Learn the court boundaries quickly — knowing where the tin, out lines, and short line are will prevent easy mistakes
Practice these basics and you will build a solid foundation in squash!
