Lesson 4 of 5 · Learn Squash
Key Rules and Fouls
Here are the most important rules you need to know as a beginner.
Serving rules:
- One foot must be inside the service box (not touching a line) at the moment of serving
- The ball must hit the front wall between the service line and the out line
- It must then land in the opposite back quarter court
- An incorrect serve loses the rally immediately — there is no second serve under PAR
During a rally, the ball is "out" or "down" if it:
- Hits the tin or the floor before the front wall (down)
- Lands on or above any out line (out)
- Either result loses the rally
Interference rulings:
- Let — rally is replayed if the opponent tried to clear but obstruction occurred
- Stroke — a point is awarded if the opponent blocked access or was hit by the ball heading to the front wall
- No let — no replay if the striker could not have reached the ball anyway
Conduct penalties escalate from warning → stroke → game → match disqualification for offences like dangerous play or dissent.
