Lesson 3 of 5 · Learn Sim Racing

How Scoring Works

Results in sim racing are determined by finishing order — the driver who crosses the finish line first wins the race.

For championships, points accumulate across the season, and the driver with the most points wins the title.

iRacing official series use a unique points system:

  • Points are based on Strength of Field (SOF) — the stronger the field and the better your finish, the more points you earn.

Many leagues and special events instead use a fixed sliding scale, similar to Formula 1:

  • Example: 25 points for a win, descending to lower points for lower finishes.
  • Bonuses such as a fastest-lap point or pole position point may also be awarded depending on the series.

iRacing also tracks two personal ratings updated continuously:

  • iRating – Measures your skill and performance, adjusted by your finishing position relative to field strength.
  • Safety Rating – Measures your cleanliness on track, driven by incident points you accumulate per corner of racing.

As a beginner, focus on improving both ratings by finishing consistently and racing cleanly!
